Do a review of four or five main competitors - work out what they are doing well and what they are doing not so well. Then, use that knowledge to shape your own ideas. What you should never do is directly copy ideas or text, but competitor reviews are a good way of ensuring that you are keeping up with the Joneses, and finding some general ideas that you can put your own unique spin on with your site.
