When To Negotiate On Salary

Jobs : The Post Interview Process

The best time to negotiate on salary, in fact the only time, is once you have been offered a job.

The reasons are simple:

If you ask before the offer then it seems like arrogance or a lack of the right priorities on your part - you might not get the job therefore the discussions are wasted

- Once you are offered the job you are in the strong position. You know that they are impressed enough with you to want to employ you. It will also be extra hassle for them to take a less desired candidate or even re-open applications

Therefore this is the ideal time to discuss salary. By all means open with your dream salary - there is no problem trying and they might surprise you. If not, then move to a next position but express reluctance to go any lower.

If you have more than one offer on the table than you can be more stubborn, but always try to push for a bit more than their stated offer.
