Health And Fitness : Food And Health There is a simple method you can use to approximate the number of calories in food even if there is not a chart of how many calories there are. All you need to know is know how many grams of each major type there is in the meal. Thus for instance if there is 35 grams of carbs, and 15 grams of fat and 20 grams of proteins, you use a simple calculation. Fat is 9 calories a gram, whilst carbs and protein is 4. Therefore in that meal there is 55 x 4 + 15 x 9 calories. Now that works out as 220 + 135, or 355 calories in total... and hence you have a good approximation of how many calories are in that meal.
