How To Overcome Writers Block

Hobbies : Writing

Writers block is a dreaded occurrance for any author whereby you just cannot put pen to paper and have something productive come out.

This happens to most writers at some stage, often many times, but if it becomes habit for you then consider changing something.

For instance if you always work in the morning, try doing so at lunchtime or in the evening - mix it up a little.

Perhaps take a day off and go on a day trip, you may find ideas suddenly pop into your head whilst doing something else that is completely unrelated to your book.

In addition, try changing the method you use to write. If you normally have a bullet point list that you expand upon, try just starting with a blank sheet of paper and see what happens.

Also try doing some association. Have your characters and their key plot lines on a piece of paper in front of you.

Look at the key plot lines and associate words to see if you can get ideas. Thus if you see the word 'tragedy' as something that happens to a character, work around that and come up with options: explosion, train crash, plane crash, missing at sea, loved one dies of illness and similar.

Work around a subject until you come up with a plot line that you understand, are excited about and feel confident that you can develop.
