Use an anti - inflammatory to to calm inflamation and soreness. Some ex- are Advil, Nuprin, and Motrin. These are also pain killers.

Now when you resume your activities, take none of the above. You need to be able to feel the pain in the knee if it arises.
If no warning signals, resume activity with caution.

Knee braces will help. Use only short term. Don't want any attachments psychologically.

If your having knee pain, no jumping hurdles, running, hiking over hilly terrains, or pole jumping. These force the kneecap strongly against the thigh bone. Forget all thses activities, until you get those leg muscles strengthened

You must also realize, that bending those knees is very important, when picking up an object. You can even throw your back out.

Knee problems can also occur with improper exercises. Especially when you first start.
So you must learn how to properly do that exercise.

Runners and walkers need to check their soles. If your a runner or walker, you need stable shoes. Place your shoes on a table, and see if they stand straight up.
If worn down the soles will tip out or in. Also check around midsole and sides for excessive wear. Many shoes severly break down after 300 miles.

There are leg muscles, and hamstrings you can do to rehabilitate an injured knee.

Lose some weight. Every time you run or walk, the force of your feet hitting the ground is felt in your knees. Some one 20 lbs over weight this is a tremendous blow.
Less weight simply means less damage.
