Isometric Exercise Explained

Health And Fitness : Toning Your Body

There are many types of exercise that are mentioned these days and it can be hard to keep up with what they all mean!

One such type of exercise is isometric exercise.

This is where the muscle contracts, but the joint itself does not actually move. Most exercises take place by straining the body against something fixed; as a classic example pressing your arms against a wall and therefore contracting the muscles but holding the position.

This type of exercise is useful if you are trying to develop the strength of a set of muscles or a muscle group. It therefore has uses for rehabilitation after injury.
