Can you tell me about what the Colosseum in Rome was used for and when it was built?
Question asked by: knowitall

The colosseum started to be built around 70AD.
It took around ten years to complete which happened in about 80AD according to the records.
It was truly massive stadium even by todays standards with room for around 50,000 spectators.
It's purpose was to act as a stadium to stage events; most often gladiatorial games and during its working lifetime thousands upon thousands of gladiators and animals were slaughtered there, not least during the continuous fourty days of games when it first opened.
