Most of these big websites that don't have their own product work by getting people to submit content.
And therein is the key - huge numbers of people use these sites everyday.
This makes it attractive to advertisers as they always want to get their message in front of huge numbers of people, so it is the advertising revenue or the potential for it that gives these sites the massive values, though whether they could ever actually make that much seems doubtful.
