what did the romans give for the main-point of fighting in the roman army?

To protect the Roman Empire and to bring the Roman ways to the rest of the world. The stronger they were the better their chance of keeping their empire and exploring and bringing their ways to the rest of the world, whilst removing challenges to their superiority too.
