What is a portfolio?

A portfolio is a collection of something.
It is often associated with models, photographers and art students, who will compiler a portfolio of their work, showing a combination of what they have created.
For instance a models portfolio would contain a range of shots of him or her, and often showing their versatility and different styles. This then becomes like their marketing tool which they show to clients in order to try to get more work.
