Alternation of generation refers to the biological phenomenon where by the mode of reproduction in the life cycle of an organism varies, or is altered.
Literally the mechanism of generation is altered, hence the phrase is descriptive.
More specifically for instance, the change may be from diploid to haploid phases and back.
