What is the treadmill effect?
Question asked by: knowitall
The treadmill effect sounds more exotic or interesting than it is.
It just refers to the fact that we always look at others around us to measure our own happiness.
This a hundred years ago if you had all the modern luxury we have today then you would be the envy of everyone - for instance a telephone, radio and anything else that only the super rich could afford.
However now that everyone has these assets - and many more things that were not invented then - you perceive them to have less value.
Therefore quality of life may get better and better but happiness does not increase due to this so-called treadmill effect where we judge and perceive our happiness relative to our standing, position and material goods relative to our peers.
