World history after 1812

It is not clear that they really did dislike each other that much.
As with any close neighbours both of which were relatively powerful there was always tension and friction between the two.
However in the end the English clearly pulled ahead with their empire, industrial revolution and the sheer huge number of inventions that they came up with meant a significant superiority in the world and Britain was the first global superpower in the modern sense.
But whilst there was rivalry it is not right to say that they hated each other, for instance they have traditionally been allies and worked closely together for the whole of the last century.
