What is a portfolio?

Good question!
A portfolio is simply the name given to a collection of related items on a topic. In modelling, a portfolio is an example set of your work, for instance a collection of photos showing work that you have done before and illustrating your modelling career to date.
In general terms, a portfolio could contain information or photos on any topic, for instance researchers may build up a portfolio of evidence on a topic.
