What is encomienda?

What is an encomienda? Well it is not something that I had heard of but I could tell it sounded like a spanish word so I looked it up on Google.
It says that this - encomienda - refers to the following: A Spanish, colonial system of land grants to Conquistadors. Apparently this was something that included rights to the use of Indian labour.
