What is the probability of life evolving on a planet?
Question asked by: knowitall
This is impossible to answer, as over an infinite period of time the chances of most things happening increase and the concept of probability becomes less intuitive and meaningful.
Broadly, scientists agree that with a constant source of heat and light, protection from bombardment (stability) and, crucially, water, there is a reasonable chance of live evolving. Broadly this means that in our universe for instance, with so much matter and planets, the vast majority of scientists believe in all probability there are significant levels of life out there.
