Where can I see the hobby bird of prey?

Question asked by: knowitall

The best place to see a hobby is during the breeding season over large pools of still fresh water that have lots of good sized dragonflies hovering over them.

The hobby specialises on these as prey and can often be seen to swoop over the water, pick them up and perhaps even eat them on a wing or take them back to a tree to eat or feed to the chicks.

I have seen a hobby in Ken Wood, which is part of Hampstead Heath in London. The Ken Wood park ranger says they are quite common there and they pounce on swifts and swallows while in the air.
