Who invented the word ladder puzzle?

This puzzle is said to have been of the puzzles that was invented by a certain Lewis Carroll who is better known for writing strange things such as Alice In Wonderland.
The word ladder is a puzzle whereby you move down a chain changing one letter in a word at a time, for instance this might be a word ladder type chain:
food --> fold --> hold --> hole --> mole
