Why does melting point trends follow trend in polarity?

The link between melting points and polarity is an interesting one.
The answer is due to the underlying chemical structure of the molecule, and the chemical bonds that are displayed within the chemical.
It is due to this underlying physical structure that this correlation is exhibited in most cases.
