Why doesn't stainless steel rust?

Question asked by: knowitall

Stainless steel does not rust due to its chemical make up that means it is sufficiently different to normal steel that does, of course, rust.

Stainless steel contains a high proportion of chromium relative to carbon - whilst chromium makes the steel more brittle it also makes it rust resistant.

Therefore the trick was in the blend, as per the modern steels we see around us in the world today!
