A husband and wife have three children, two girls and a boy. The couple is expecting a fourth child. What is the likelihood that the child will be a boy? a. 100% b. 75% c. 50% d. 25%?

Question asked by: knowitall

The answer is 50%.

Some people get confused by what has gone before, but even if you have twenty boys in a row the chance of getting another boy is still 50% and the chance of a girl at that stage also 50%.

If the probability of x occurring at any time is y, then the chance of x occurring next time is also y, irrespective of any previous chain of non-x or x occurrances.
