Can more than one religion be true?

Question asked by: knowitall

Interesting question. Most religions but not all define themselves as exclusively true.

For instance a religion that says its god is the one true god is clearly making an exclusive claim to truth - by definition any religion that worships a different god or gods is not, as defined by the other religion, a true god and is therefore false.

Not all religions define themselves exclusively, and some religions share the same god.

Hope this helps answer your religious studies homework ;)

Interesting question, let's examine it from the Bibles viewpoint. First look at the ancient Israelites at Judg. 10:6, 7: “The sons of Israel again proceeded to do what was bad in the eyes of God, and they began to serve the Baals and the Ashtoreth images and the gods of Syria and the gods of Sidon and the gods of Moab and the gods of the sons of Ammon and the gods of the Philistines. So they left their God and did not serve him. At this God's anger blazed against Israel.” So we see that any person or group that worships any other thing or person other than the God of the Bible, that worship is unsacceptable. Of all the religions of that time only the Israelites had the form of religion that was acceptable to God or put another way they had the only true religion. In the time of Jesus the Jews were supposed to have had the only true form of religion. However Jesus said to the religious leaders of his day ‘Isaiah aptly prophesied about you hypocrites, as it is written, “This people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far removed from me. It is in vain that they keep worshiping me, because they teach as doctrines commands of men. So even though professing to worship God, Jesus said their worship was usless because it taught their own human thoughts and not God's. At 2 Cor. 11:14, 15 We read: “Satan himself keeps transforming himself into an angel of light. It is therefore nothing great if his ministers also keep transforming themselves into ministers of righteousness.” (Here we are cautioned that not everything that originates with Satan may appear hideous. One of his chief methods of deceiving mankind has been false religion of all kinds, to some of which he gives a righteous appearance.) 2 Tim. 3:2, 5: “Men will be . . . having a form of godly devotion but proving false to its power; and from these turn away.” (Regardless of their outward professions of love for God, if those with whom you worship do not sincerely apply his Word in their own lives, the Bible urges you to break off such association.) So the answer to your question is NO there is only one true religion acording to the Bible. Now you must find that religion, but how, out of all the religions, many professing to be Christian can you find the one true religion?
