Can we travel in time to the past?

Question asked by: mrquestion

Asked on: 12 Jan 2010

This is one of the big topics of the day.

At the moment most people would probably say that this could not be done, but no-one knows for sure.

Certainly the paradoxes to do with backward time travel would need to be shown to not be able to occur.

Also it depends on the mechanism used, as if it were some sort of entity that could travel faster than time it would bring into account all sorts of other problems and paradoxes with relativity theory that bans anything travelling faster than light.

Time travel is posible if the multiverse is real, you get round the grandfather parodox because you can go back to a universe where someone (you) killed your grandfather, you would still be born in your own universe, but you wouldn't be born again in the universe in which you killed your grandfather(obviously) For it to work every event needs it's own universe, that's my guess anyway

Theoretically, yes it is possible, but in reality it will never happen. according to einstein's theory, the speed of light is the speed limit of the universe and at the speed of light, time stops. we have done experiments where we had two stop-watches, kept one on earth and orbited one around the earth near the speed of light and we found that the watch in space was a little bit behind the watch that was left here. so, as you approach the speed of light time slows down, at the speed of light time stops, and IN THEORY if you would keep going faster then the speed of light, time would go backwards. but this is not possible because as you approach the speed of light, mass approaches infinite needing an infinite amount of force to keep it accelerating.

We would certainly know if we could travel back in time because if we could then surely someone on Earth would end up travelling back in time in the future, thus that event would have already happened to us. If for example i decided to go back in time 3 years, that experiance would have already been witnessed because people would have seen me if this event were to happen.
