How can I learn to play by ear?

Question asked by: knowitall

Playing music by ear is something that some talented musicians can do easily whilst others find it very hard to play even a basic tune by ear.

Therefore no doubt a large element of this is due to innate ability.

However there are things you can do.

First of all practice.

Listen to a tune on TV or radio and then try to play back the melody.

Over time you naturally get better at judging notes and, more importantly, the intervals between each note in a tune and you can therefore repeat it quicker, easier and with less mistakes.

Playing by ear is achievable by anyone with enough practice, and sweet music will result!
