How did New Netherland become New York and New Jersey?

When the English came over and took control and command, they changed the name over from New Amsterdam to New York.
This is why so many places across America have the names of cities across England specifically due to the large influence during the period of time when England set up and ran America, leaving the foundations of what is there today.
