In term of X question.

The length of a piece of wood is 2X + 1 centimetres. A second piece of wood is 3X centimetres longer than the first piece of wood. Write down in terms of X the length of the second piece of wood.

5x + 1

It is just a case of adding them together, so if one is 3x longer and you know the length of the first all you do is add them on

that gives you 2x + 1 + 3x which is the same as 5x + 1
