Sulphur dioxide in the air is a pollutant that can cause acid rain, most sulphur compounds and some nitrogen compounds will cause acid rain in fact.
And most acids will also cause corrosion of metals which is some cases causes black residues.
Carbon monoxide can lead to blood poisoning because it reacts with the oxygen in the haemoglobin to form carboxy compounds and stealing or starving the red blood cells of the pure oxygen molecules that they need.
