Sahara desert

I was wondering, What is beneath the sands of the Sahara desert? Is it rock? Some sort of clay? Dense soils? Also, How deep are the sands of the Sahara desert?

There is lots of information about the Sahara Desert on wikipedia so you might like to look at that site.

The sahara used to be ocean at one stage so I assume there is sedimentary rock and remains of dead creatures underneath it, but that is from memory I haven't checked it is right.
