What is the role of eign function in quantum mechanics

Question asked by: rafique

Asked on: 06 May 2010

I think you mean eigen function rather than eign function?

To find out more about eigenfunctions then I would suggest reading this page here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eigenfunction

It explains what they are and I'm not confident enough to put it in my own words, and it also mentions about Schrodinger's equation and the role of eigenfunction in quantum mechanics, essentially making it a natural description/explanation of why only certain energy states are allowed which is a key tenet of course of the quantum theory.
