Why are puzzles so popular at the moment?

This is a very interesting question. There is no doubt that trends and fashions come and go.
At the moment it is definitely the case that puzzles are, as it were, 'in'.
The crossword has been a perennial favourite ever since it was introduced, but now it seems that other puzzles have also taken root.
Particularly among these is the sudoku puzzle which is going great guns and may continue to do so.
Lesser puzzles that have been introduced will probably not do as well longer term, but it will be interesting to watch the trends and patterns as things settle down.
