Why is atheism more popular than in times gone by?

The main reason for this is as in the answer to your other question that science and maths have made such a good job of explaining the world.
Many processes that were mysterious in the past can now be explained, we know more and more about the world than ever before and the scientists can predict and manipulate things around them like never before, so many parts of the world bear the hallmark of human activity and there seems to be less and less, they would argue, that requires any sort of explanation, if indeed anything at all, that is beyond the realms of the scientific method.
