Will the Sun engulf the earth?

Question asked by: knowitall

The answer is yes, eventually. But not for a few billion years time so no need to worry!

As it runs out of hydrogen, the sun will burn helium getting hotter and turning to a red giant. It will expand growing a lot larger, and may in fact engulf the earth - certainly the inner planets. It may well then become a white dwarf, not being hot enough to burn carbon at a later stage and produce the heavy elements that are distributed in supernovae.
