How did it happen that models tend to be so thin and skinny?

The ultimate reason why models are so skinny is simply that it makes designers lives much easier.
The problem with normal women, from the point of view of making clothing, is that their curves and shape means that many clothes do not fit right.
However with models as they are boylike in having no womanly features there is no problem as they are straight up and down so being like a clothes hanger the designers will know exactly how the clothes will fit making it much easier for fashion shows and so on. And that's why models are so skinny.
