How do I get rid of unwanted ferns?

I once had a small patch of garden with some ferns, which were reasonably attractive; now they are taking over and I can't get rid of them. Any ideas?

Could you not simply cut them down or use weedkiller instead, or is there something preventing either of those methods being feasible?

If not can't think what else would do it other than burning them in a controlled fashion!
