Intelligence levels of guinea pigs does vary a lot!
What you should do when buying a guinea pig is get one that is inquisitive and sniffing around etc when you are looking at them rather than the quiet one just sitting there in the corner.
Some guinea pigs do show intelligence such as gnawing or making a banging sound when you are nearby to get attention for instance that they want some food or drink.
