Is advertising income a sustainable business model for websites?

It seems that it might not be.

In many companies and sites over recent years the move has very much been to free content to maximise audience then relying on advertising for income.

We've seen this clearly with sites like friends reunited that were paid for then had to be free when things like facebook came along.

However the sustainability of this model is seen to be questionable and many companies don't make enough from advertising to cover their massive server costs and staff costs etc, therefore there might be a swing back to some sort of happy medium in the future.
