Is it safe to whiten teeth?

Many horror stories abound about bleaching and whitening teeth.
This is particularly of relevance in America where everyone always seems to have perfect teeth one way or the other - and not so relevant in Europe where this is not seen as so important.
In general the best way is to use a gentle whitening toothpaste as opposed to trying some sort of other quick fix method.
Therefore the toothpaste is the way to go.
