When salt is dissolved in water, it ionises, to give sodium and chloride ions.

Profile image! When a salt is dissolved in water it dissociates into cation(s) and anion(s). The cation and anion both are separately surrounded by water molecules. Thereby the charges on them are delocalised. The process of solvation is endothermic. So, the the solution becomes cold.
