What is Flash?

What is Flash, I thought everyone would know what this is these days!
Flash is a way of presenting animated content and typically you will see on websites they have videos running through a flash player for instance I believe that the smash hit website for sharing and showing videos that is YouTube uses flash to play the videos.
Flash can also be used to create graphic animations and so if you go to a website with fancy animations and so on then the chances are good that this was done in Flash.
