What is the best photo resolution?

The photo resolution of digital cameras is going up and up all the time so any answer will be out of date.
It is not so many years since for instance 1 to 2 megapixels were state of the art, and now of course that's the lowest you would expect from your cheapo mobile phone or cellphone, so therefore the answer is that it is going up and up all the time as technology gets better.
