Why did the spanish introduce encomienda?

Apparently it was to care for and protect the indigenous people.
There is lots of stuff on google about the encomienda system so to find out more I would suggest that you search for it on there and then read some background material this will give you a good understanding about encomienda and what it is and enable you to answer to the questions.
