What is a missing vowels puzzle?

A missing vowels puzzle is one in which a word or series of words more usually is given but without the vowels in them.

You then have to work out what it is that they are with the vowels.

These are often themed puzzles, so for instance if you had one on Kings of England then you might represent Edward the confessor like this:

DWRDTHCNFESSR

Sometimes the spacing is left in place whilst other times it is shuffled around to make them harder to solve.
