What is a self timer?

A self timer can be a small product which you attatch to a belt/your pants to time how much you have either walked or ran(the distance you have done).
Yet a self timer can also be on a camera,when enabled, it gives a delay between the pressing of the shutter release and the shutter firing. It is most commonly used to allow photographers to take a photo of themselves, hence the name.
