Where do thoughts come from?

i know this may seam a silly question but ive often wondered is a thought a reaction to something that has just happened, or does it come from out of the blue, e.g FIRE -thought- flames burning better put it out better get out. or is a thought just formed from nothing.

Interesting question and philosophers and psychologists have spent many years wondering about thought and consciousness, the overarching phenomenon within which thoughts take place.

Too big a topic to cover here, there are massive of research pieces and articles on the internet and the best hope is to read these for a view of some of the literature and thoughts on this.
