Why have new planets been added to the solar system?
Question asked by: knowitall

New planets have been added to the solar system to solve the Pluto problem - that now more and more bodies are being found of a similar or even bigger size to Pluto that seem to therefore downgrade what a planet is unless something is done.
Therefore Pluto and similar objects become plutons which expands the solar system but leaves the traditional idea of the planets, minus Pluto, safely intact.
One interesting consequence on this model is that the moon of Pluto as currently classified, Charon, is actually promoted to the status of being a Pluton itself.
