Does going to university get you a better job?

Question asked by: mrquestion

Asked on: 22 Dec 2009

Going to university does not guarantee you a better job, but historically it has been shown to lead to an average increase in salary.

In general a graduate will start on a higher salary compared to their peers who do not go to university. Additionally over the course of their career on average they will go on to earn more than their peers who did not.

However some are questioning if this is still the case with the oversaturation of the job market, and additionally with so many now going to university that a uni education is seen as less prestigious than before.

Arts graduates particularly from a-n-other-former-polytechnic are now finding it very hard to get jobs and actually there is now a real argument to be made that unless you go to a decent university you are better off going straight into employment and saving yourself £20,000 of debt.
