How are fossils formed?

Question asked by: knowitall

Fossils are formed over many, many years by the action of various environmental factors that lead to the decay of the material around the bone, whilst the bone survives due to its hardness relative to the soft organic flesh surrounding the bone structure.

A fossil is caused often by great pressure acting over a large period of time that compresses the item that is fossilised into a rock or other substance.
