How can I learn to sight read music?

Question asked by: knowitall

If you want to sight read music then it is all about practice.

The other thing you need is the ability to look ahead.

Learn to read ahead particularly when playing quiet and easy to play sections so that you know what is coming next in the harder parts.

If you have time quickly scan through the piece before you start playing to get an idea of what it is like.

Lots of practice is the single main thing that you need to get good at sight reading however because it is tricky and therefore nothing but practice and training will make you a good sight reader.

When scanning a piece, make a note of its key, time, any accidentals, any significant dynamic/expression markings and any potentially tricky bits that you can mentally rehearse.
