How many kinds of atom are there in a lump of copper?
Question asked by: knowitall
There is only one kind of atom in a lump of any element.
That's because elements are, well, elementary and therefore only contain one atom - in this case, copper atoms.
However lumps of most things contain more than one atom, because they will contain more than one element inside them. For instance a lump of steel may contain iron and carbon atoms and possibly small amounts of other atoms too.
Elements are the building blocks and therefore basic.
