What is an extra region sudoku?

An extra region sudoku puzzle is one in which there are the usual rows and columns and boxes.
However there are additional regions added to the puzzle that also must contain 1 - 9 once only.
Sudoku X is the classic extra region puzzle with two new regions though there are many other possibilities some of which are more or less common than others.
